Roatan Honduras, March 2007 Well another exciting trip to Roatan has come and gone without you. Sigh… But don’t dismay!! We are going again in just 6 months. Look for the dates soon on this website’s home page and download the PDF info package. So what happened on this year’s spring trip?? Read on. To start, our group of 7 divers was unexpectedly cut short by one this year as my buddy and long time customer Jeff, who could not get his passport renewed in time (thanks Gov’t passport Swines!!) Ouch. We missed him, but he will be with us in late September/early October on the next trip. Our trip down to Roatan was smooth as usual. It has become a fairly standard journey after doing it so many times. When our 737 arrived at the beautiful ocean side airport in Roatan the temperature was a welcomed 30 something degrees. Greeted there by friendly Carlos and the Sueno Del Mar mini bus, we were on our way to the hotel/dive shop. Within twenty minutes I could already feel the atmosphere kicking in; "oh yeah baby it's island time". Time to check in to our rooms grab a cold bevy from the dive shop fridge (they sell after dive beers in the shop for around a dollar). On our first night, the tradition is to have dinner at the famous Luna Beach Resort, just a short walk from our place. The food is amazing, and the thirsty Canucks where introduced to something called a monkey la-la. The owner of Luna Beach, Chuck Aberle, has also built a beautiful bird aviary with macaws and other bright feathered friends, who’s own brand of music enrich the sounds of the evening. Over the next 6 days we encountered hundreds of reef dwellers captured by our lenses and memory cards for future enjoyment. I must admit I love photography there: it’s amazing, I feel like some kind of “big-game” hunter or something. Ward and Sandy both brought their lap tops with them, which at first I gave them the razzing for but I was soon appreciating. We had a blast each afternoon down loading and viewing our masterpieces on the big screens with everyone gathered around to get bragging rights. The oooo’s and aaaah’s were like the ones you hear during a fireworks display. Super fun. The best photo definitely had to go to Ward though, with a near perfect capturing of the super rare “Purple Spotted Sea Goddess” nudibranch. The name is apt for something so amazing. It was a fun little friendly competition, I kept walking past him for three days muttering “stupid spotted sea goddess”. LOL. There were many nights of delicious dinners at local restaurants and evenings at the local disco’s dancing and getting to know new friends. At journeys end, we said our good bye to the island, for now, and prepared to come home (rain?!). But not without a litre or two of the islandsCentenario dark rum; it’s to die for. We can't wait for the fall... will you be there?? (read more about this charter) “Breathe Continuously” Dan Sidney Dive n Surf |
