May 2007: Mystery Wreck Identified

On April 10 th, 2007 I was contacted by John Harper who is helping organize the Sidney Ocean Day. In his e-mail was a sonar imagery of the water front of the town with several items listed to be explored and photographed for the New Marine Center. One of the objects was a unknown wreck of some kind ! Within 24 hours I had organized a search team to find the wreck and collect data.

On our first attempt we (Sandy, Verena, Stacy, Dave and myself ) found the object in about 40 feet of water directly out in front of the Tulista Park boat launch and ferry terminal. The object appears to be an old boiler of some kind, research is on going.

Since then, thanks to information from an old friend, we are looking for several lost underwater treasures, including 2 downed aircraft, a train car and a tug boat wreck. Two nights a week over the next few months divers from Sidney Dive n Surf will be doing search dives for these and other lost items and documenting the finds, stay tuned!!
